Donation of Art Supplies to Schools
April 23, 2008
Three of our volunteers traveled to the districts of Characato and Mollebaya, near Arequipa, on April 23. There we visited four public schools whose students come from families of modest means. Unfortunately the Peruvian government often does not provide public schools with sufficient funding. We decided to donate art supplies so that the young students will be able to develop their creativity.
First we met with the director of the San Juan Bautista primary school in Characato. We presented the director with art supplies consisting of crayons, colored pencils, various types of drawing and construction paper, and pens. We also donated several games for the students' amusement. The director then accompanied us on a tour of the school, where we gave each student a yo-yo or jump rope.
Then we visited the "Maria de la Esperanza" school for developmentally challenged students. This small school only has eight full-time students with various mental disabilities. Because of the students' conditions, the school receives even less funding than other public schools. The director was extremely happy to receive our donation of art supplies and warm clothing.

Finally, we traveled to the village of Virgen de Chapi where two preschools share a tiny space in a dilapidated building near the dusty main street. The "Early Stimulation Service" preschool is for children aged 1-3 years, while the "PRONOI" preschool teaches older children (aged 3-5). Prior to our visit both schools had government-issued tables and chairs, but little else. Thanks to Program for a Better Peru's donation of crayons, paper, tempera paint, finger paint, colored pencils, and chalk, the schools' teachers will be able to offer their pupils a fun and stimulating learning environment.
