Peru
A country of 26 million inhabitants, Peru is located on the western coast
of South America. Its capital and largest city is Lima, and its other
regions encompass diverse coastal, highland, and jungle areas. "The Land of the
Incas" is a country rich in history and culture. From the ruins of Machu
Picchu to the floating islands of Lake Titicaca, there are abundant sites and
activities for tourists.
Unfortunately, a closer look at Peru reveals that in this magical country, everyday life is still a struggle for most citizens. Peru is a developing country where more than half the population lives in poverty. The economic situation leads to problems such as poor sanitation, reduced educational access, chronic malnutrition, and lack of proper clothing and shelter.
Arequipa and its "Pueblos Jovenes"Arequipa is located in Southern Peru, between the coast and the highlands, at an altitude of 7,740 feet. It is the second largest city in the country, with roughly one million residents. In recent years the population of Arequipa's poor suburbs has been increasing rapidly due to an influx of job-seekers from the highlands.
This population movement has given rise to numerous small settlements (sometimes known as "pueblos jovenes" or "young towns") outside Arequipa of people who live in extreme poverty. Many of these villages lack electricity and running water. Others have basic services provided by the government, but unemployment and economic hardship are rampant. Children in these villages often do not have shoes, educational supplies, or toys. Their parents try to make ends meet but are unable to break free of the cycle of poverty.
Program for a Better Peru is dedicated to helping these underprivileged communities near Arequipa.
